PORT ROYAL ET L’ITALIE

On 13 and 14 October, the Ambrosiana hosts the annual international conference of the Society of Friends of Port-Royal is held, organized with the support of the Faculty of Letters of the Sorbonne University, of the Center for Linguistic Studies and French Literatures (CELLF – UMR 8599), by the Center for the History of Medieval and Modern Societies (MéMo, University of Paris Nanterre), by the National Museum of Port-Royal des Champs and the Society for Seventeenth Century Studies.

The European horizons of Port-Royal seem resolutely turned towards Italy. In question, undoubtedly, the conflictual relationship that maintained with Rome both the abbey of Port-Royal and its surroundings, but also the religious and political movements of the 18th and 19th centuries who claimed Jansenism.
We could then be tempted not to consider the interactions, over the long term, of Port-Royal and Jansenism with the Peninsula only in doctrinal or, more occasionally, theological-political terms, what is more, in terms of the Roman center alone.
This conference would like to re-examine the report of Port-Royal and the Jansenist circles with Roman authority and Italian dimension of the Catholic Church, a report still largely unknown on many points, but also and above all to broaden the perspectives, by questioning the relationships of Port-Royal to Italy and of Italy to Port-Royal even in their spiritual, cultural and literary aspects. Without chronological, disciplinary or geographical limitation, it intends to shed light on the unique, complex but lasting relationship which united Italy with the abbey of Port-Royal and its relatives in the 17th century century, but also to Jansenist circles of the 18th century as well as to historians and emulators of Jansenism of the 19th and 20th centuries, both French and Italian.
