THE COPY FROM LIFE

How can we recognise the style of an artwork? And how can we date it? How do can we discover the hand that created it?

Through this practical workshop in copying a great masterpiece from life, we will take the opportunity to discuss all those formal elements that enable us to place an artwork in its historical-cultural context and formulate an attribution.

From the peculiar traits of each artistic period to the style of the workshop, such as hallmarks and what are called “Morellian details”, the workshop will enable the participants to grasp, amid the difficulty of artistic production, the whole background of the artwork, both in technical terms (construction of form, creation of colours, rendering of chiaroscuro, perspective, and much else), and from a wider point of view, which will teach the participants to develop an eye like an art historian.
